WRIST INJURY

by

Wrist pain suggests of an injury either due to sprain or fractures. However, the pain can also be a symptom of diseases like arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. An accurate diagnosis is therefore critical for a targeted treatment.

The wrist is a complex joint. It is made up of small bones that are connected to each other by the ligaments, and also connect it to the forearm bones and hand bones. An injury of the wrist can affect the ability to use the hand.

Sudden impact resulting to sprain, strain and fracture is a common reason of wrist injury. Wrist pain can also be a symptom of certain diseases or medical conditions which include arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, Kienbock’s disease and ganglion cysts. People who had a past injury in the wrist may possibly have osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a common disorder in the wrist. The carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that is caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist. A kienbock’s disease is associated with a swollen and painful wrist. The ganglion cyst commonly develops along the joints of the wrists. Sometimes, it causes pain as it interferes with wrist movement.

Wrist injury can happen to anyone. But there are people who are in high risk of this injury which includes sports players in basketball, baseball bowling, football and golf; older adults that are prone of osteoporosis; workers who are doing repetitive tasks using the hands and wrist like the haircutters; and pregnant women who are going through some hormonal changes may develop carpal tunnel.

With so many possible reasons of wrist pain, it is sometimes hard to tell what is causing it. It is therefore expedient to consult with an orthopedic professional for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. Treatments for wrist injury may vary on the type and severity of the injury. The doctor may prescribe medicine, therapy or surgery.
