KNEE INJURY

by

Knee injuries are a common sports injury and can also e caused from a bad fall or a car accident. After sustaining a knee injury it is important to have physical therapy and adequate rest while the knee joint is healing or you might end up with a long term injury.

The knee joint is a complex joint, the largest joint in the body and one that is often prone to injuries. Many knee injuries can be successfully treated without surgery, while others require surgery to correct. Orthopedic knee replacements and corrective surgeries are very common in the United States and thousands of surgeries are performed annually.

ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries are common knee injuries suffered by athletes, basketball players and football players. The ACL is one of the main ligaments of the knee and if the damage is not too severe, non-surgical treatment can rectify the problem.

The MCL (medial collateral ligament) can be damaged as a result of a hard blow to the knee cap, during contact sports like football and basketball. The PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) can also be damaged when there is a blow to the outside of the knee playing sport or from falling down.

Torn cartilage is another cause of knee pain and injury and is often referred to as a torn meniscus. The meniscus is a rubbery area of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber for the knee. Tearing the meniscus can be very painful and can put the knee out of action for some time; it also causes severe pain when walking.

Orthopedic surgeons have a variety of ways to treat knee injuries; the most common non-surgical treatment is called R.I.C.E. This stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. While healing a knee injury, the more time the knee is kept elevated the faster it will heal.
