Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy: The New Frontier In Healing Sports Injury

by

We have heard a lot of news on radio, on TV, and online about famous athletes and sports celebrities withdrawing from or unable to play their tournaments or games following an injury. A soccer player had skipped the rest of his games because of a pulled hamstring. A famous golfer pulled out from the tournament because of a knee injury. A top-ranked tennis player failed to appear in his major tournament of the season because of a serious tennis elbow.

These kinds of injuries which involve torn tendons, ligaments and muscles and broken or fractured bones are common in most athletes whether professional or amateurs. However, even non-athletes such as people who are active in physical activities like sports and martial arts, may also succumb to such injuries through accidents. Sometimes accidents can happen in such physically-demanding activities which would usually result to injuries.

Most of the injuries mentioned above can be treated through minor surgery or therapy, depending on the severity or the type of the injury. Most torn and wounded tissues, such as in a pulled hamstring or knee injury, can now be treated through a platelet-rich plasma therapy. By nature, bones, ligaments and tendons don’t get rich supply of blood. This is the reason why injuries in these regions don’t heal fast enough if left untreated.

Most untreated hamstrings or torn ligaments and tendons usually take 6 to 12 months to heal before the athletes can play back again. Today, more and more athletes go for platelet-rich plasma therapy to be able to recover quickly. The orthopedics will usually inject the platelet-rich plasma at the site of the injury. The platelet-rich plasma contains concentrated growth factors that may have spurred the growth of the injured tissues in such a short time.
