Common uses of platelet rich plasma

by

Platelet rich plasma, usually abbreviated as PRP, involves the use of a part of human blood with a high concentration of platelets for curative purposes. Blood platelets have been found to have a high potential for healing the human body by releasing growth factors necessary for repairing the body.

PRP is usually extracted from the blood in a process that separates the required platelets from red blood cells in a centrifuge spinning at very high speeds. Platelets extracted in this process have high plasma content and are usually from the patient’s own blood. They are normally injected into the injured or ailing part of the patient’s body. The platelets injected to the patient are usually three to ten times more concentrated than in normal blood.

Platelet rich plasma therapy is based on the blood clotting concept in which the adhesive property of the platelets promotes accelerated healing. The use of platelet rich plasma is also popular in orthopedic procedures where it is used to promote regeneration of injured tendon fibers and torn ligaments. PRP has also been found to be quite effective in promoting healing that experience less optimal flow of blood such as in tendons and ligaments.

One of the key reasons for the use of platelet rich plasma is the fact that the procedure has fewer side effects in comparison with conventional drugs related treatment procedures. This is mainly because the blood from which platelets are extracted is usually drawn from the patient. Basically the patient is treated with components of his or her own blood. There is very little risk of rejection of the platelets by the patient’s body much less allergic reactions.

Platelet rich plasma has been used in bone grafting operations for injuries in the neck, mouth, and jaw for over twenty years. It is currently very popular in treatment of sports injuries such as repair of torn tendons, rotator cuff tendonopathy, and muscle injuries. In comparison with other types of surgery, PRP treatment is cheaper.
