What Is Arthroscopy?

by

Inserting a type of endoscope called an arthroscope into a joint through a small incision is called arthroscopic surgery. This procedure helps treats or examines a damaged interior of a joint. Orthopedic situations that require such approaches include torn cartilage, trimming damaged cartilage and reconstruction.

Arthroscopy is preferred over open surgery because a joint does not have to be surgically opened to assess and diagnose a problem. Two minute incisions are clinically made. One serves as the entry point for a surgical instrument while the other opening is for the arthroscope. Recovery time is highly reduced and increases surgical success because of least damage to connective tissue. Professional athletes often hurt their ankles and require minimal recovery time. Minimum scaring is experienced because of minimal incisions. Miniature surgical instruments are used with surgeons examine the joint section on video monitors and can detect and mend torn joint tissue. Advances have been made in technology enabling an arthroscopic study on almost every joint in the human body. The shoulder, wrist, foot, hip ankle, elbow and knee make the most commonly examined and treated joints using arthroscopy.

Major backbone invasive surgery involves excavation of muscle, ligament and bone to reach and treat painful conditions. Mid-spine complications require that a surgeon accesses the region through the rib cage which lengthens recovery time. Arthroscopic spinal procedures allow a surgeon treat these conditions with minimal damage to surrounding tissue. With reduced recovery time, patients continue treatment as outpatients. Overall condition of patient and severity of infection affect recovery rates. Arthroscopic procedures give common spine trauma, spinal deformity, disc degeneration and hernia ion and tumors. While most arthroscopic surgery is done on shoulders and knees because of how the joints are formed, recent studies show further improvement. Patients with hip related complications can also benefit from arthroscopy as a diagnosis and treatment solution.
