Causes of foot injuries

by

A foot injury can result from severe incidents such as road accidents and extreme sports as well as from seemingly harmless incidents such as a slight stumble inside your house or a sprain suffered while walking along the street. In some cases, depending on severity or lack of medical attention, a foot injury can take a long time to heal thereby affecting your performance of day to day activities. An innocent act of stumbling over an unlevelled paving slab may lead to serious consequences if not addressed on time.

There are also some self-inflicted causes of foot injury. For example wearing high heeled shoes for extended periods of time can be quite harmful to your feet. Wearing ill-fitting footwear can cause bunions and corns and may also cause contusions to the balls and on top of your foot. Exerting excess stress on your feet by rigorous exercises or excessive dancing may damage your feet if you are not physically fit. Foot injuries can also be a consequence of excess weight. Occupational situations that require standing or walking for extended periods of time have also been known to cause injuries to the feet.

Your feet can also be adversely affected by chronic systemic diseases as well as bacterial and fungal infections. A few of the common ailments that affect the feet include diabetics, gout, and Hansen’s disease. Managing a foot injury will depend on the cause of the ailment. Using ice packs on the affected foot can always decrease the swelling just as using anti-fungal creams can eliminate the effects fungal infections such as athlete’s foot. Massage therapies, wearing the right style and size of shoes, occasionally resting your feet after walking or standing for a long period of time, and simple stretching exercises can be helpful in avoiding injuries to your feet. However, it is imperative to consult an orthopedic practitioner whenever you experience chronic or severe foot pains.
