SPINE INJURY

by

The spine is the vertebral column that protects the spinal cord and supports the head, shoulders and upper body. It allows you to stand upright provides the flexibility to bend and twist.

The spine consists of three segments: the cervical spine (c-shaped curves of the neck), lumbar spine (lower back) and thoracic spine (reversed c-shaped). If one of these segments becomes too large or small, standing up straight will become difficult and posture looks abnormal which is commonly referred as spinal deformity. Scoliosis is a type of spinal deformity that is a sideways curvature.

Small bones called vertebrae consists the spine that are linked by ligaments, tendons and muscles. Between vertebrae are discs that function as shock absorbers. These are round, spongy pads of cartilage. The bones formed a canal to protect the spinal cord.

One of the most common spine injuries is the ruptured discs. It can happen anywhere along the spine but they are most common in the lower back and the neck areas. Gradual degeneration or strain may damage the disc and cause its outer layer to break open.

A sudden trauma or extended sitting or standing may put too much stress on a disc causing a tear or rip on the tough exterior of the intervertebral discs called annular tear. Bulging discs is another spine injury when a discs between the vertebrae becomes weak and pops out of its normal perimeter. This can cause a discomfort or in some cases, disability to some parts of the body. Some people may not know they have bulging discs. The only way to find out is to have it checked by an orthopedic practitioner if you experience discomfort or pain.

Early treatment may prevent complications or serious damage. If you feel spinal pain, have it checked immediately by an orthopedic professional.
