ORTHOPEDICS

by

Technological advancement has assisted in every aspect of life, not least of all in the area of Orthopedics, the study of bones which comprise the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedics comes from the Greek words ‘ortho’, which means straight or correct, and ‘pedics’ comes from the Greek ‘pais’ meaning children. Orthopedic medicine has progressed a long way from when it was mostly involved in assisting children born with twisted limbs. Today, it is able to improve the quality of life for persons of any age.

As a result of the various technologies such as x-rays, CAT scans, etc. it is possible to see if there is a problem with any area of the musculoskeletal system of the body. Such injuries as fractures, sprains, strains, ligament and tendon tears and instabilities, dislocations and separations can be repaired by knowledgeable Orthopedic surgeons.

Modern orthopaedic surgeons have achieved what would 100 years ago have been termed a miracle. Spinal injuries were once considered to be a figment of the imagination, but thanks to the discoveries made through research and technology, people who would once have been unable to stand, sit or walk, are now able to enjoy a mobile lifestyle.

A major progression is the amalgamation of the skills of physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists, psychologists, podiatrists and occupational therapists. The uniting of these various fields of medicine has significantly changed the face of Orthopedics.

A serious injury can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life. If in an automobile accident, a leg is broken, they will experience pain and may need surgery to repair the leg. A pin, plate or rod may have to be inserted into the leg by the orthopaedic surgeon to assist healing. It will most likely be necessary to use a walking aid, and a physical therapist will help to rebuild the muscles.

As the physical effects gradually diminish, it may become apparent that other conditions are affecting the recovery, and a psychologist can assist with coping with the emotional effects from the accident and injury. The mental attitude is equally important to the final positive outcome, as the repair to the body.
