BACK PAIN

by

Back pain is traditionally treated in many different ways including surgery, physical therapy, chiropractic manipulations, back braces and various medications including steroids and pain killers. Orthopedic advances for back injuries have received recent attention due to advances in micro surgery techniques, including minimally invasive surgical procedures. This method of surgery uses small incisions, to access an injured part of the spine, just enough room for the surgical instruments and micro cameras to access. Healing time is vastly improved because there is far less nerve and tissue damage and therefore less area to heal.

Muscle strain is a common cause of back pain and is referred to as lumbar muscle strain, often causing lower back pain which usually can be resolved after a few weeks of treatment. A ruptured intervertebral disc, often called a herniated disc, can cause more serious back pain. Alternatively discogenic back injury is where the disc is damaged, but not herniated and is more easily treated. Diagnostic x-rays are often needed to know whether it is herniated or discogenic.

Understanding the cause of back pain is the key to proper treatment. Orthopedic specialists need a thorough history of all regular and recent activities to get to the bottom of the cause of your back pain. One of the reasons why back pain is often difficult to treat is because patients are not always aware of the underlying cause of their injury.

Serious back injuries may require surgery to correct, but many other less serious back injuries, can be corrected with a chiropractic adjustment and some physical therapy. Merely using pain medication does not improve the condition long term and can sometimes even make it worse. It is important to have the condition properly diagnosed, so that a treatment can be started before the condition deteriorates further.

Orthopedic treatments for back pain have improved with recent advances in minimally invasive surgery and modern physical therapy techniques. Often a combination of several treatments is needed to restore movement to the injured part of the spine.

If you have been suffering with back pain for some time and using pain killers to manage the pain, you should speak to your doctor about some of the new treatment options available for back pain.
